Boston
What happens to your pickup when Boston snows
Every winter, the same week produces the same two phone calls. Both are avoidable with a conversation in November.
Boston winters do not usually stop ground transportation. What they do is stretch it. A transfer that runs forty minutes in October runs seventy in February, the same route, the same car. The operators who handle this well are not the ones with better cars — they are the ones who moved the pickup time the night before.
The decision is made the evening before
By the time it is snowing, the useful decisions are gone. The ones that matter happen the previous evening: pulling the pickup earlier, switching a sedan to an all-wheel-drive SUV, or moving a Logan departure to an earlier flight while seats still exist. A dispatcher watching a storm should be calling you, not waiting for you to call.
Vehicle class matters more than usual
A full-size SUV on winter-capable tyres handles an unploughed side street in a way a low sedan does not. In a normal week the choice is about luggage and headroom. In a storm week it is about whether the car can reach the front door of a house in Weston at six in the morning.
Airport departures move earlier, not later
The instinct during a storm is to leave later because the flight will surely be delayed. It usually backfires. Roads degrade faster than schedules slip, security queues swell with rebooked passengers, and a delay can be recovered from inside the terminal but not from the Pike. Leave early and wait somewhere warm.
What to agree with your operator in advance
Who decides to move a pickup, and by how much, without needing your approval. Whether an AWD vehicle is substituted automatically and at whose cost. Which phone number gets the call at five in the morning. Settle this once, in writing, at the start of the season, and the February storm becomes a notification instead of a negotiation.
Questions
Commonly asked
Do you cancel in bad weather?+
Rarely, and never silently. If a trip genuinely cannot be run safely we call you with as much notice as we have, and with the alternatives we can offer.
Is there a surcharge during storms?+
Our fares are quoted all-in at booking and we do not apply surge pricing, including in weather. If a different vehicle class is genuinely required, we tell you what it costs before we substitute it.
