Black car or rideshare: an honest comparison

We sell one of these, so read this accordingly. We have still tried to write the version we would want to read.

For a twenty-two dollar trip across town on a Wednesday afternoon, rideshare is faster to arrange, cheaper, and entirely adequate. Any car service that tells you otherwise is selling. The interesting question is where the line sits, and it is not where price sits — it is where consequence sits.

The variable that actually decides it

Ask what happens if the car does not arrive. If the answer is that you wait eight minutes and order another one, use the app. If the answer is that a managing partner misses a flight to a closing, or a client you flew in stands on a kerb, you are no longer buying transport. You are buying the elimination of a tail risk, and that is a different product with a different price.

Where a car service is genuinely better

Pickups before six in the morning and after ten at night, when app supply thins exactly when you need it. Airport arrivals, where flight tracking and included wait time change the economics entirely. Multi-stop days and roadshows, where holding one car and one chauffeur beats re-hailing eleven times. Anything involving a client or a candidate. And anywhere expense reporting, cost centres or duty of care are part of the picture.

Where it is not

Short ad hoc trips. Junior staff moving around a city. Anything where the traveller would rather not wait for a scheduled car. Plenty of firms we work with use both deliberately, with a policy line that says which is expected when. That is a more honest arrangement than pretending one tool does everything.

The price comparison people get wrong

Comparing a quoted all-in fare against an app estimate is not like for like. The app figure excludes surge at the moment you actually need it, excludes waiting, and excludes the cost of the reconciliation work it creates. On a calm Tuesday the app wins on price. At five-forty on a snowy Monday to Logan, the comparison frequently inverts, and the fare you were quoted a week earlier does not move.

What we would tell a friend

Use the app for the ordinary. Put the trips that cannot fail on an account with a real operator, and make that distinction explicit in your policy so nobody has to make the judgement at six in the morning.

Questions

Commonly asked

Do you have surge pricing?+

No. Fares are quoted all-in at booking and do not change because of demand, weather or time of day.

Is there a minimum spend on a corporate account?+

Tell us how your team travels and we will tell you plainly what applies. We would rather you start with one airport run than commit to something you have not tested.
